TL;DR
An old talapoin monkey died from sudden neurological symptoms caused by an ischemic stroke, as confirmed by post-mortem examination.
Contribution
This case report documents ischemic stroke in a talapoin monkey, a rare occurrence in non-human primates.
Findings
The monkey showed sudden neurological signs and died within 24 hours.
Necropsy found a large brain infarct with thrombus and neuronal damage.
Arteriosclerosis was identified as a contributing factor to the stroke.
Abstract
A captive senile talapoin monkey ( Miopithecus talapoin ) developed sudden neurological signs and died within 24 h. Necropsy revealed an extensive infarct in the right hemisphere, from occipital to frontal lobe. Microscopy showed a thrombus, neuronal edema, and necrosis, and arteriosclerosis, characterizing an ischemic stroke.
