S. R. Czapor, R. G. McLenaghan, F. D. Sasse

TL;DR
This paper proves that Petrov type III space-times do not support the conformally invariant or non-invariant scalar wave equations satisfying Huygens' principle, clarifying the conditions under which wave propagation exhibits sharp wavefronts.
Contribution
It establishes a no-go result for Huygens' principle in Petrov type III space-times for both conformally invariant and non-invariant scalar wave equations.
Findings
No Petrov type III space-times satisfy Huygens' principle for these wave equations.
The result applies to both conformally invariant and non-invariant scalar wave equations.
Clarifies the geometric conditions for wave propagation in general relativity.
Abstract
We prove that there are no Petrov type III space-times on which the conformally invariant (self-adjoint) scalar wave equation or the non-self-adjoint scalar wave equation satisfies Huygens' principle.
