The M Theory Five-Brane and the Heterotic String
John H. Schwarz

TL;DR
This paper discusses recent advances in formulating brane actions with chiral bosons, focusing on the M theory five-brane and heterotic string, and demonstrates how the five-brane reduces to the heterotic string via double dimensional reduction.
Contribution
It provides new insights into the description of chiral boson branes and shows the reduction of the M theory five-brane to the heterotic string.
Findings
Progress in describing brane actions with chiral bosons
Double dimensional reduction of the M theory five-brane yields the heterotic string
Enhanced understanding of M theory five-brane and heterotic string relationship
Abstract
Brane actions with chiral bosons present special challenges. Recent progress in the description of the two main examples -- the M theory five-brane and the heterotic string -- is described. Also, double dimensional reduction of the M theory five-brane on K3 is shown to give the heterotic string.
