C. Bachas (Ecole Polytechnique), E. Kiritsis (CERN)

TL;DR
This paper investigates the role of F^4 terms in toroidal compactifications of type-I and heterotic SO(32) string theories, emphasizing BPS multiplets' contributions and confirming heterotic-type-I duality at one loop.
Contribution
It provides a simple argument for BPS multiplets' exclusive contribution to F^4 terms and verifies heterotic-type-I duality at one loop in these compactifications.
Findings
Only short BPS multiplets contribute at one loop.
Heterotic-type-I duality is verified at this order.
F^4 terms are analyzed in toroidal compactifications.
Abstract
We discuss terms in torroidal compactifications of type-I and heterotic SO(32) string theory. We give a simple argument why only short BPS multiplets contribute to these terms at one loop, and verify heterotic-type-I duality to this order.
