Small Instantons, del Pezzo Surfaces and Type I' theory
M.R. Douglas, S. Katz, C. Vafa

TL;DR
This paper explores how collapsing del Pezzo surfaces in Calabi-Yau manifolds relate to small instantons in exceptional gauge groups and explains the physics of 4-brane probes in Type I' compactifications.
Contribution
It provides a geometric interpretation of small instantons via collapsing del Pezzo surfaces and connects this to the physics of 4-brane probes in Type I' theory.
Findings
Small instantons correspond to collapsing del Pezzo surfaces.
The geometry explains the physics of 4-brane probes in Type I' compactification.
Provides a geometric framework for understanding instantons in string theory.
Abstract
Small instantons of exceptional groups arise geometrically by a collapsing del Pezzo surface in a CY. We use this to explain the physics of a 4-brane probe in Type I' compactification to 9 dimensions.
