TL;DR
This paper explores the connection between W gravity, supersymmetric extensions, and infinite-dimensional gauge theories in a 2+2 dimensional setting, proposing a unified framework linking various self-dual theories and string backgrounds.
Contribution
It introduces a novel interpretation of W gravity as a gauge theory of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms related to $SU^*( infty)$ instantons and extends this to supersymmetric and higher-dimensional contexts.
Findings
W gravity as gauge theory of $$ diffeomorphisms
Supersymmetric extension to super-W gravity

Abstract
We conjecture that gravity can be interpreted as the gauge theory of diffeomorphisms in the space of dimensionally-reduced Yang-Mills instantons. These diffeomorphisms preserve a volume-three form and are those which furnish the correspondence between the dimensionally-reduced Plebanski equation and the KP equation in dimensions. A supersymmetric extension furnishes super- gravity. The Super-Plebanski equation generates self-dual complexified super gravitational backgrounds (SDSG) in terms of the super-Plebanski second heavenly form. Since the latter equation yields complexified backgrounds associated with the complexified-cotangent space of the Riemannian surface, , required in the formulation of complexified Self-Dual Yang-Mills theory, (SDYM ); it naturally follows that the recently…
