TL;DR
This paper demonstrates that the entropy of a massless free field's ground state, obtained by tracing over interior degrees of freedom, scales with the area of a sphere, suggesting connections to black hole physics.
Contribution
It shows that the ground state entropy for a free field is proportional to the area, highlighting a potential link to black hole entropy.
Findings
Entropy scales with the area of the sphere
Supports the area law in quantum field theory
Suggests a connection to black hole thermodynamics
Abstract
The ground state density matrix for a massless free field is traced over the degrees of freedom residing inside an imaginary sphere; the resulting entropy is shown to be proportional to the area (and not the volume) of the sphere. Possible connections with the physics of black holes are discussed.
