Three-Dimensional Gravity and String Ghosts
S. Carlip, I. I. Kogan

TL;DR
This paper demonstrates that string diffeomorphism ghosts can be understood through three-dimensional gravity and topological field theory, providing a new perspective on their origin.
Contribution
It introduces a novel explanation for string ghosts using three-dimensional physics, linking string theory structures to topological field theory.
Findings
String ghosts are explained via 3D gravity.
The approach applies to simple topologies.
Provides a new conceptual framework for string theory.
Abstract
It is known that much of the structure of string theory can be derived from three-dimensional topological field theory and gravity. We show here that, at least for simple topologies, the string diffeomorphism ghosts can also be explained in terms of three-dimensional physics.
