Relaxing to a three dimensional brane junction
D. Bazeia, F.A. Brito, L. Losano

TL;DR
The paper proposes a mechanism where a universe with initially nine spatial dimensions can naturally evolve into a lower-dimensional 3+1 space-time through bifurcations in a nonlinear oscillatory system modeled as an Einstein solid, leading to brane junctions.
Contribution
It introduces a novel physical mechanism involving phase oscillations and bifurcations in a nonlinear system to explain the emergence of lower-dimensional space-time.
Findings
Bifurcations lead to lower-dimensional brane junctions.
A model based on Einstein solid oscillations explains dimensional reduction.
The mechanism provides a natural selection process for 3+1 dimensions.
Abstract
We suggest a mechanism which leads to 3+1 space-time dimensions. The Universe assumed to have nine spatial dimensions is regarded as a special nonlinear oscillatory system -- a kind of Einstein solid. There are p-brane solutions which manifest as phase oscillations separating different phase states. The presence of interactions allows for bifurcations of higher dimensional spaces to lower dimensional ones in the form of brane junctions. We argue this is a natural way to select lower dimensions.
