TL;DR
This paper reviews the spin foam formalism and proposes a novel way to define the string theory path integral on a group manifold as a two-dimensional spin foam state sum.
Contribution
It introduces a new spin foam approach to formulating string theory path integrals on group manifolds, bridging quantum gravity and string theory.

Spin foam formalism applied to string theory path integrals

Potential connections between quantum gravity and string theory
Abstract
We review briefly the spin foam formalism for constructing path integrals for the BF and related theories. Then we describe how the path integral for the string theory on a group manifold can be defined as a two-dimensional spin foam state sum.
