The invariant charges of the Nambu-Goto String and Canonical Quantization
Dorothea Bahns

TL;DR
This paper demonstrates that the algebra of diffeomorphism-invariant charges in the Nambu-Goto string cannot be quantized using canonical methods, regardless of the spacetime dimension.
Contribution
It provides a dimension-independent proof that canonical quantization cannot be applied to the algebra of invariant charges in the Nambu-Goto string.
Findings
Canonical quantization fails for the algebra of invariant charges
The proof is independent of the Minkowski space dimension
Highlights limitations of canonical quantization in string theory
Abstract
It is shown that the algebra of diffeomorphism-invariant charges of the Nambu-Goto string cannot be quantized in the framework of canonical quantization. The argument is shown to be independent of the dimension of the underlying Minkowski space.
