TL;DR
This paper investigates the Hawking-Page phase transition in dual conformal field theories using Landau's theory, demonstrating how the Cardy-Verlinde formula naturally emerges from this analysis.
Contribution
It introduces a boundary free energy approach employing Landau's theory to analyze phase transitions and links this to the Cardy-Verlinde formula in a novel way.
Findings
Hawking-Page transition analyzed via boundary free energies
Cardy-Verlinde formula derived from phase transition analysis
General observations on phase transitions and the formula's relation
Abstract
The free energies of the conformal field theories dual to charged adS and rotating adS black holes show Hawking-Page phase transition. We study the transition by constructing boundary free energies in terms of order parameters. This is done by employing Landau's phenomenological theory of first order phase transition. The Cardy-Verlinde formula is then showed to follow quite naturally. We further make some general observations on the Cardy-Verlinde formula and the first order phase transition.
