TL;DR
This paper reviews string theory in plane wave backgrounds, focusing on the BMN correspondence, Penrose limit, light-cone string field theory, and extensions to less supersymmetric cases, highlighting their connections to gauge theories.
Contribution
It provides a comprehensive overview of string dynamics in plane wave backgrounds and their relation to gauge theories, emphasizing recent developments and extensions.
Findings
Clarifies the role of the Penrose limit in deriving BMN duality.
Summarizes light-cone string field theory in maximally supersymmetric backgrounds.
Discusses extensions of the correspondence to less supersymmetric backgrounds.
Abstract
I review aspects of string theory on plane wave backgrounds emphasising the connection to gauge theory given by the BMN correspondence. Topics covered include the Penrose limit and its role in deriving the BMN duality from AdS/CFT, light-cone string field theory in the maximally supersymmetric plane wave and extensions of the correspondence to less supersymmetric backgrounds.
