Monopoles, Duality, and String Theory
Joseph Polchinski

TL;DR
This paper explores the theoretical implications of magnetic monopoles and duality in string theory, proposing principles of completeness that connect these concepts to fundamental charge quantization.
Contribution
It introduces two principles of completeness and illustrates their relevance within the context of monopoles, duality, and string theory.
Findings
Proposes principles of completeness related to monopoles and duality
Connects magnetic monopoles to charge quantization in string theory
Provides examples illustrating these theoretical concepts
Abstract
Dirac showed that the existence of magnetic monopoles would imply quantization of electric charge. I discuss the converse, and propose two `principles of completeness' which I illustrate with various examples.
