Penrose limits and maximal supersymmetry
Matthias Blau, Jose Figueroa-O'Farrill, Christopher Hull, George, Papadopoulos

TL;DR
This paper demonstrates how maximally supersymmetric pp-wave solutions in IIB superstring and M-theories can be derived from AdS x S backgrounds via Penrose limits, revealing new insights into their geometric and supersymmetric properties.
Contribution
It shows that maximally supersymmetric pp-waves are obtainable as Penrose limits of AdS x S solutions and explores the probe brane geometry in large tension limits.
Findings
Maximally supersymmetric pp-waves are derived from AdS x S backgrounds.
In large tension limits, brane probe geometries are Minkowski or pp-waves.
The work links supersymmetric solutions through geometric limits.
Abstract
We show that the maximally supersymmetric pp-waves of IIB superstring and M-theories can be obtained as a Penrose limit of the supersymmetric AdS x S solutions. In addition we find that in a certain large tension limit, the geometry seen by a brane probe in an AdS x S background is either Minkowski space or a maximally supersymmetric pp-wave.
