Polarized J/psi production at CLEO
Seungwon Baek, P. Ko, Jungil Lee, H. S. Song

TL;DR
This paper analyzes the polarization of prompt J/psi particles produced in electron-positron collisions at CLEO energy, revealing how different production mechanisms influence polarization and providing tests for the color-octet mechanism within NRQCD.
Contribution
It demonstrates the strong dependence of J/psi polarization on production mechanisms and suggests polarization measurements as tests for the color-octet process in NRQCD.
Findings
Color-singlet mechanism produces highly longitudinally polarized J/psi.
Color-octet mechanism results in nearly unpolarized J/psi at energy endpoint.
Polarization measurements can constrain NRQCD matrix elements.
Abstract
Polarizations of the prompt 's produced in the annihilation at CLEO energy ( GeV) are considered in the framework of NRQCD factorization formalism. We find that the polarization has strong dependence on the production mechanism. At CLEO energy, the most dominant production mechanism in the most phase space is the color-singlet mechanism, , for which 's are highly longitudinally polarized. On the other hand, the dominant production mechanism at the upper end point of energy distribution is the color-octet process, , for which 's are almost unpolarized. Thus, the measurement of the polarization of the end point 's can give another test of color-octet mechanism, and constraint on the NRQCD matrix elements.
