TL;DR
This paper investigates how Dirac sheets and gauge fixing ambiguities affect photon correlators in U(1) lattice gauge theory, proposing an algorithm to avoid Dirac sheets and find the global gauge extremum.
Contribution
It introduces a gauge fixing algorithm that avoids Dirac sheets and reliably finds the global extremum in U(1) lattice gauge theory.
Findings
Photon correlators depend strongly on gauge fixing ambiguity.
The proposed algorithm effectively avoids Dirac sheets.
It successfully finds the global extremum of the gauge condition.
Abstract
Photon correlators in pure gauge theory for different lattice actions are considered under the Lorentz gauge condition. They are shown to depend strongly on the gauge fixing ambiguity and on the corresponding existence of Dirac sheets. For the Coulomb phase a gauge fixing algorithm is proposed which avoids Dirac sheets and allows to find the global extremum of the non-local gauge condition.
