CLEO Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper reports the first observations of specific charmless B meson decays into pion and kaon final states, providing new measurements of branching fractions and estimating the weak phase gamma.
Contribution
It presents the first observation of B to pi+ pi- and B to K0 pi0 decays, along with improved measurements of related decay modes and an initial estimate of the weak phase gamma.
Findings
First observation of B to pi+ pi- decay
First observation of B to K0 pi0 decay
Estimated weak phase gamma as 113° (+25°, -23°)
Abstract
We have studied charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states with kaons and pions. We present preliminary results based on 9.66 million pairs collected with the CLEO detector. We have made the first observation of the decay , with the branching fraction of . We have also observed for the first time the decay with the branching fraction of , thus completing the set of four branching fraction measurements. We present improved measurements for the decays , , and . We use these and other charmless hadronic B decays to make a first determination of the value of the weak phase ${\rm Arg}(V^*_{ub})=\gamma =…
