Search for the Flavor-Changing Neutral-Current Decays $D^+\to \pi^+ \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $D^+\to \pi^+ e^+ e^-$
Fermilab E791 Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper reports a search for rare flavor-changing neutral-current decays of the D+ meson into pion and lepton pairs, setting upper limits on their branching fractions due to no observed signal.
Contribution
The study provides new upper limits on the branching fractions of D+ decays to pion and lepton pairs, improving constraints on flavor-changing neutral currents in charm meson decays.
Findings
No signal observed above background.
Upper limits set on branching fractions: <1.8×10^{-5} for muons, <6.6×10^{-5} for electrons.
Results constrain new physics models involving flavor-changing neutral currents.
Abstract
We report the results of a search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decays and in data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791. No signal above background is found, and we obtain upper limits on branching fractions, and , at the 90\% confidence level.
