Study of the decay $D^0 \to K^- K^- K^+ \pi^+$
Fermilab E791 Collaboration

TL;DR
This study measures the decay rate of the rare $D^0 o K^- K^- K^+ ext{pi}^+$ decay mode, observes a significant contribution from the $D^0 o ext{phi} K^- ext{pi}^+$ channel, and estimates decay amplitude contributions.
Contribution
First measurement of the decay rate for $D^0 o K^- K^- K^+ ext{pi}^+$ and analysis of decay amplitudes involving quark-antiquark pair production.
Findings
Decay rate is approximately 0.54% of the normalization mode.
Clear signal observed for $D^0 o ext{phi} K^- ext{pi}^+$.
Estimated the relative importance of decay amplitudes with extra quark-antiquark pairs.
Abstract
Using data from the E791 fixed-target hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab we have studied the Cabibbo-favored but phase-space suppressed decay, . We find the decay rate for this mode to be times that for the normalization mode . We observe a clear signal for which is consistent with producing of the signal. In the context of simple models, we use our measurements to estimate the importance of decay amplitudes that produce extra quark-antiquark pairs from the vacuum relative to those that do not.
