TL;DR
This paper demonstrates through thought experiments that nonextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes cannot become extremal by absorbing charged particles or shells, confirming the stability of their nonextremal state.
Contribution
It provides a theoretical analysis showing the impossibility of extremal transition via particle or shell assimilation in Reissner-Nordstrom black holes.
Findings
Nonextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes cannot become extremal by assimilation.
Supports the stability of nonextremal black holes against such processes.
Uses gedanken experiments to establish these results.
Abstract
By using the gedanken experiments suggested by Bekenstein and Rosenzweig, we have shown that nonextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cannot turn into extremal one by assimilating infalling charged particle and charged spherical shell.
