TL;DR
This paper reports the measurement of an exceptionally high quality factor in annealed fused silica, reaching a record value of over 2×10^8 at 384 Hz, demonstrating improved dissipation properties.
Contribution
It provides the highest published quality factor for fused silica, achieved through annealing, advancing understanding of low-loss silica materials.
Findings
Record high Q factor of (2.03±0.01)×10^8 at 384 Hz
Annealing significantly reduces dissipation in fused silica
Fused silica's potential for high-precision applications
Abstract
We present the results of quality factor measurements for rod samples made of fused silica. To decrease the dissipation we annealed our samples. The highest quality factor that we observed was for a mode at 384 Hz. This is the highest published value of in fused silica measured to date.
