Tidal effects cannot be absent in a vacuum
Norbert Van den Bergh

TL;DR
This paper proves that in general relativity, vacuum space-times cannot have a purely gravito-magnetic Weyl tensor when observed by freely falling observers, indicating the unavoidable presence of tidal effects.
Contribution
It establishes a no-go theorem showing the impossibility of purely gravito-magnetic vacuum space-times in general relativity.
Findings
Purely gravito-magnetic vacuum solutions do not exist.
Tidal effects are unavoidable in vacuum space-times.
The result holds with or without a cosmological constant.
Abstract
It is shown that there are no vacuum space-times (with or without cosmological constant) for which the Weyl-tensor is purely gravito-magnetic with respect to a congruence of freely falling observers.
