Erik F. Tjong Kim Sang, Sabine Buchholz

TL;DR
This paper introduces the CoNLL-2000 shared task focused on text chunking, providing background, participating systems overview, and performance discussion to advance syntactic grouping methods.
Contribution
It presents the first shared task on text chunking, establishing a benchmark and analyzing various system performances in this NLP subfield.
Findings
Multiple systems participated, showing varied performance levels.
The shared task set a standard for future research in text chunking.
Performance metrics and system comparisons were provided.
Abstract
We describe the CoNLL-2000 shared task: dividing text into syntactically related non-overlapping groups of words, so-called text chunking. We give background information on the data sets, present a general overview of the systems that have taken part in the shared task and briefly discuss their performance.
