Vortices in thin ferromagnetic films and the skyrmion number
O. A. Tretiakov, O. Tchernyshyov

TL;DR
This paper links vortex-antivortex annihilation in thin ferromagnetic films to skyrmion formation and decay, providing a new perspective on magnetic vortex dynamics and topological structures.
Contribution
It reveals that vortex-antivortex annihilation can be interpreted as skyrmion formation and decay, offering a novel understanding of magnetic topological phenomena.
Findings
Vortex-antivortex annihilation corresponds to skyrmion formation and decay
Numerical observations of vortex dynamics are reinterpreted as skyrmion processes
Provides insight into topological transitions in ferromagnetic films
Abstract
We point out that a peculiar annihilation of a vortex-antovortex pair observed numerically by Hertel and Schneider [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 177202 (2006)] represents the formation and subsequent decay of a skyrmion.
