M.V.Cheremisin, G.G.Samsonidze

TL;DR
This paper investigates current instability in ungated 2D electron layers and demonstrates the potential for a single-mode terahertz generator operating at THz frequencies.
Contribution
It provides a theoretical analysis of current instability and proposes a new single-mode THz generation mechanism in ungated 2D electron systems.
Findings
Current instability can be induced in ungated 2D electron layers.
Single-mode operation in the terahertz range is feasible.
The analysis applies to arbitrary current and scattering conditions.
Abstract
We analyze the current instability of the steady state with a direct current for an ungated two-dimensional(2D) electron layer for arbitrary current and the carrier scattering strength. We demonstrate the possibility of single-mode generator operating in terahertz frequency range.
