Andrey R. Kolovsky, Andreas Buchleitner

TL;DR
This paper demonstrates that the energy spectrum of the 1D Bose-Hubbard model with a static field shows clear signs of quantum chaos, causing irreversible decay of Bloch oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.
Contribution
It reveals quantum chaos signatures in the Bose-Hubbard model under experimental conditions, linking spectral properties to dynamical decay phenomena.
Findings
Spectral signatures of quantum chaos identified
Bloch oscillations decay irreversibly due to chaos
Applicable to current Bose-Einstein condensate experiments
Abstract
We show that, in the parameter regime of state of the art experiments on Bose Einstein Condensates loaded into optical lattices, the energy spectrum of the 1D Bose-Hubbard model amended by a static field exhibits unambiguous signatures of quantum chaos. In the dynamics, this leads to the irreversible decay of Bloch oscillations.
