TL;DR
This study investigates the magnetic properties of a decagonal quasicrystal, revealing inhomogeneous magnetism, spin-glass behavior at low temperatures, and a reduction in magnetic Mn moments below 120K through NMR and susceptibility measurements.
Contribution
It provides detailed NMR and magnetic data showing inhomogeneous magnetism and spin-glass freezing in a decagonal quasicrystal, highlighting the complex magnetic environment of Mn ions.
Findings
Mn ions have an average magnetic moment of ~2μ_B.
Spin-glass freezing occurs at Tf=12K.
Approximately half of Mn ions carry no magnetic moment.
Abstract
We report the results of measurements of Al and Mn NMR spectra, the related spin-lattice relaxation rates, and the dc magnetic susceptibility of the stable decagonal quasicrystal AlPdMn. The temperature-variation of the magnetic susceptibility reveals that the Mn ions carry only an average magnetic moment of approximately , and confirms a spin-glass type freezing of the Mn-moments at K. The NMR spectra reveal two partially resolved lines for the Al-nuclei, indicating that there are two different sets of environments for the Al-sites. The integrated intensity of the Mn line in the spectra suggests that about half of the Mn ions carry no magnetic moment. Below 50K, and upon decreasing the temperature, the Al NMR-linewidth and the spin-lattice relaxation rate both grow with an…
