TL;DR
This paper introduces a bosonic model in two dimensions that exhibits a $Z_3$ fractionalized insulator phase with fractional charge excitations and topological order, expanding understanding of fractionalization in condensed matter systems.
Contribution
The paper constructs a new bosonic model with unfrustrated hopping and short-range interactions that realizes a $Z_3$ fractionalized insulator phase in zero magnetic field.
Findings
Realization of $Z_3$ fractionalized insulator phase in 2D
Presence of gapped fractional charge excitations (1/3)
Existence of gapped $Z_3$ vortices
Abstract
Bosonic model with unfrustrated hopping and short-range repulsive interaction is constructed that realizes fractionalized insulator phase in two dimensions and in zero magnetic field. Such phase is characterized as having gapped charged excitations that carry fractional electrical charge 1/3 and also gapped vortices above the topologically ordered ground state.
