Rational Blowdowns of Smooth 4-Manifolds
Ronald Fintushel, Ronald Stern

TL;DR
This paper introduces a surgical technique called rational blowdown for smooth 4-manifolds and analyzes its impact on Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants, providing new tools for 4-manifold topology.
Contribution
It presents the rational blowdown procedure and studies its effects on key invariants, advancing understanding of 4-manifold modifications.
Findings
Rational blowdown alters Donaldson invariants.
Rational blowdown affects Seiberg-Witten invariants.
Provides a method to construct new 4-manifolds with desired properties.
Abstract
In this paper we introduce a surgical procedure, called a rational blowdown, for a smooth 4-manifold X and determine how this procedure affects both the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of X.
