Variations in Hormones and Antioxidant Status in Relation to Flowering in Early, Mid, and Late Varieties of Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) of United Arab Emirates
Abdul J. Cheruth, Shyam S. Kurup, Sreeramanan Subramaniam

TL;DR
This study explores how hormones and antioxidants affect flowering in three date palm varieties in the UAE.
Contribution
The study reveals distinct hormonal and antioxidant patterns linked to flowering stages in early, mid, and late date palm varieties.
Findings
ABA and zeatin levels were higher during preflowering and decreased during flowering.
Khalas variety showed significantly higher ascorbic acid and tocopherol levels compared to other varieties.
Catalase activity varied across growth stages, with the lowest in the Khalas variety during preflowering.
Abstract
The present study was carried out to assess the status of various hormones responsible for the flower induction of Nagal, Lulu, and Khalas date palm varieties in UAE. The nonenzymatic antioxidant compounds and the antioxidant enzymatic activities at preflowering, flowering, and postflowering stages of the date palm varieties were quantified. The ABA and zeatin concentrations were found to be significantly higher during the preflowering stage but gradually decreased during the flowering period and then increased after the flowering stage. Gibberellic acid (GA) concentrations were significantly higher in the early flowering varieties and higher levels of ABA may contribute to the delayed flowering in mid and late varieties. The results on hormone profiling displayed a significant variation between seasons (preflowering, flowering, and postflowering) and also between the three date palms…
