Public health relevance—How does this work relate to a public health issue? Gender-based violence (GBV) against women in South Africa is a major public health problem due to its widespread occurrence and serious health implications. GBV relates to a higher incidence of physical injuries, mental health disorders, and sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV, all of which are a burden on the healthcare system. Understanding the health effects of GBV is key to creating effective strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality in affected women.
