TL;DR
This study compares digital and traditional orthodontic model analysis and finds that digital methods are just as accurate but faster.
Contribution
The study validates digital orthodontic model analysis as an efficient and accurate alternative to conventional methods.
Findings
Digital analysis showed equivalent accuracy to conventional plaster models.
Digital methods demonstrated better time efficiency and high reproducibility.
Bolton analysis and arch measurements were comparable between the two methods.
Abstract
There is a need to validate whether digital orthodontic model analysis, using intraoral scans, provides equivalent accuracy, reproducibility, and time efficiency compared to conventional plaster model analysis. Hence, this cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 patients treated by orthodontists. The plaster models were taken through the acquisition of Impression of alginates and pouring and the intraoral scans were taken in a digital scanner. By two independent examiners, both models were examined on tooth measurements, arch measurements and the analysis by Bolton. Statistical evaluation was carried out using intraclass correlation coefficients, paired t-tests and Bland-Altman analysis. Digital orthodontic model analysis is as accurate as the traditional one, with better time efficiency and high reproducibility and as such, can be used in the clinic as an alternative to traditional…
