TL;DR
This study explores how physical activity and fitness relate to working memory and math achievement in adolescents, considering socioeconomic factors.
Contribution
The study identifies physical fitness as a mediator linking physical activity to working memory and academic outcomes in adolescents.
Findings
Physical activity is positively associated with physical fitness, which in turn predicts working memory.
Working memory significantly predicts mathematics achievement in adolescents.
Physical fitness partially mediates the relationship between physical activity and working memory.
Abstract
Socioeconomic disparities influence both academic achievement and health-related behaviors during adolescence; however, the mechanisms linking physical activity, physical fitness, and cognitive functions—particularly working memory—to academic outcomes remain insufficiently understood.
