TL;DR
This paper highlights the importance of upper limb rehabilitation specialists in managing chronic graft versus host disease to improve patient outcomes.
Contribution
The paper emphasizes the need for upper limb specialists in treating chronic graft versus host disease, which is often overlooked.
Findings
Only three relevant articles were found, all showing positive rehabilitation outcomes in upper and lower limb function.
Chronic graft versus host disease commonly affects upper limb musculoskeletal health, requiring specialized care.
Collaboration with upper limb therapists can enhance patient range of motion and quality of life.
Abstract
Chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) is a complex post-transplant complication resulting in varying degrees of musculoskeletal (MSK) manifestations, including sclerosis-type skin conditions, fasciitis, and osteopenia, avascular necrosis affecting the shoulder, elbow and hands apart from other joints of the body. A large proportion of these can often miss out on the expertise of upper limb therapists. This paper aims to outline upper limb cGVHD manifestations to raise awareness among upper limb physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists, so that patients can receive more focused, optimal care. An electronic search was conducted across a wide database covering the period from 1990 to 2025. Further manual search used Google Scholar to help identify relevant articles. Boolean operators ‘AND’ and ‘OR’ combined keywords such as chronic graft versus host disease, acute graft versus…
