TL;DR
This study shows that unhealthy lifestyle behaviors like tobacco and alcohol use are strongly linked to poor mental health in adolescents across 48 countries.
Contribution
The study reveals consistent associations between lifestyle behaviors and mental health indicators across different levels of national development.
Findings
Tobacco and alcohol use were strongly linked to anxiety, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts in adolescents.
The strength of lifestyle-mental health associations varied by a country's Human Development Index (HDI).
Inadequate school attendance was consistently associated with poor mental health outcomes across all HDI levels.
