TL;DR
This study explores how HIV-related stigma and mental health issues affect care for meningitis patients in rural Uganda, highlighting barriers and suggesting solutions.
Contribution
The study provides new insights into the co-occurrence of HIV-related stigma and mental illness among meningitis patients in rural Uganda.
Findings
Stigma and mental illness symptoms were common among HIV-associated meningitis patients, affecting care adherence.
Family members reported higher rates of stigma and mental illness symptoms in deceased patients compared to survivors.
Barriers to HIV care included lack of education, social support, and stigma, while access to clinics and social support were facilitators.
