TL;DR
Higher lead exposure in childhood, especially later in childhood, is linked to increased depressive symptoms in adolescence.
Contribution
This study identifies late childhood as a critical period for lead exposure's impact on depressive symptoms.
Findings
Increased childhood blood lead concentrations were associated with elevated depressive symptoms in adolescence.
Exposure later in childhood showed particularly large increases in depressive symptoms.
No significant associations were found between lead exposure and anxiety symptoms.
Abstract
This cohort study investigates the association of blood lead concentrations in specific childhood periods with depressive and anxiety symptoms in later childhood. Is higher lead exposure during specific periods of childhood associated with increased depressive or anxiety symptoms in later childhood? In this cohort study of 218 caregiver-child dyads, increased childhood blood lead concentrations were associated with increased depressive symptoms in adolescence, with particularly large increases in depressive symptoms when exposure occurred later in childhood. No associations were observed with anxiety symptoms. In this study, cumulative and later-childhood lead exposure was associated with increased risk of child depressive symptoms, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to reduce lead exposure throughout childhood. Low-level lead exposure during early brain development is…
