When nonstandard meets standard: Language and affective dynamics in accent-diverse group interactions
Merrisa Lin, Nairán Ramírez-Esparza, Alexandra Paxton

TL;DR
This study explores how a standard-accented newcomer affects the communication and emotions of nonstandard-accented group members during interactions.
Contribution
It reveals how a newcomer disrupts existing group dynamics and influences linguistic and affective responses in accent-diverse settings.
Findings
Participants shifted their linguistic style toward the newcomer and diverged from each other.
Positive affect more strongly predicted perceived interaction quality after the newcomer joined.
Speech mistakes increased, but filler words decreased, indicating disrupted interaction dynamics.
