Social isolation, loneliness, and positive affect before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in very old adults living in Germany: a quasi-experimental multi-sample study
Ibrahim Demirer, Jaroslava Zimmermann

TL;DR
This study examines how social isolation and loneliness affected positive emotions in very old adults in Germany before and during the pandemic.
Contribution
The study introduces a pooled-multi-sample design to analyze understudied cumulative risks in very old adults during the pandemic.
Findings
Social isolation had a stronger negative effect on positive affect during the pandemic than before.
Loneliness mediated about 34% of the effect during the pandemic and 70% before.
IPTW methods effectively balanced data across time periods and produced robust results.
