TL;DR
This study in Venezuela finds that poverty and health issues are linked to poor adherence to HIV treatment, affecting patients' quality of life.
Contribution
The study provides preliminary data on the sociodemographic and health factors affecting ART adherence in Venezuela, a region with limited prior research.
Findings
ART non-adherence is strongly associated with extreme poverty, alcohol use, and illicit drug use.
Low-income and problems with usual activities are significant risk factors for ART non-adherence.
Most patients reported no major issues in quality of life domains like mobility and self-care.
Abstract
HIV is now a manageable chronic illness with near-normal life expectancy when Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is taken correctly. However, social challenges such as poverty, stigma, and mental health issues continue to impact ART adherence and Quality of Life (QoL). In Venezuela, research in this area is scarce, with only one QoL study in the past decade. We assessed QoL using the EuroQol 5 Dimension (EQ-5D) scale and compared ART-adherent vs. non-adherent patients. We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study involving HIV patients on ART for ≥1 year. Participants were recruited from The University Hospital of Caracas-Outpatient Clinic and completed a structured sociodemographic survey and the EQ-5D-3L. Statistical analyses included Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Mann–Whitney U, t-test, chi-square, and Fisher’s exact tests. Binomial logistic regression (backward stepwise Wald selection)…
