TL;DR
A rapid PCR test for bloodstream infections shows faster results and good accuracy but misses some pathogens not on its target list.
Contribution
Real-world evaluation of the BioFire BCID 2 Panel in a North Indian hospital, highlighting its impact on antimicrobial stewardship.
Findings
The BCID panel detected bacterial pathogens in 78.5% of cases, with a 70-hour lead time over standard-of-care methods.
The panel had a high positive predictive agreement (88.1%) and identified potential for antimicrobial adjustments in 90% of cases.
It detected fungal pathogens in 11.4% of cases but failed to identify pathogens outside its target spectrum.
Abstract
Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major contributor to mortality, necessitating prompt and accurate pathogen identification to guide effective antimicrobial therapy. The BioFire Blood Culture Identification 2 Panel (BF BCID 2P), a multiplex PCR based assay, promises rapid pathogen detection and resistance marker identification with a turnaround time of approximately one hour. This study evaluates the diagnostic utility of the BCID panel compared to the standard-of-care (SoC) in patients with suspected BSIs.Organisms and anti-microbial resistance genes detected by multiplex PCR in patients with suspected bloodstream infectionOrganisms isolated by standard-of-care with targets not available on multiplex PCR Organisms and anti-microbial resistance genes detected by multiplex PCR in patients with suspected bloodstream infection Organisms isolated by standard-of-care with targets not…
