TL;DR
This study examines Salmonella infections in a Dominican Republic hospital, highlighting high fluoroquinolone resistance and mortality rates.
Contribution
The study provides clinical and microbiological insights into fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella in a low- to middle-income country setting.
Findings
Mortality rate was 17.9% among hospitalized patients with salmonellosis.
92.7% of isolates showed non-susceptibility to ciprofloxacin.
Blood cultures were associated with higher mortality in fluoroquinolone-resistant cases.
Abstract
Fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella spp was classified by the WHO as a high priority pathogen due to its increasing resistance and high burden of infection, especially in low- and middle-income countries. This study describes the clinical and microbiological characteristics, comorbidities, and outcomes of patients with salmonellosis assisted in a teaching hospital.Origin of the salmonella samplesSalmonella Serotypes i Origin of the salmonella samples Salmonella Serotypes i We conducted a retrospective observational study including patients with a Salmonella spp. positive culture from April 12, 2021, to April 15, 2025. Antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance mechanisms were extracted from microbiology reports. Descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis were used to assess associations between clinical variables and mortality. We included 44 isolates from 43 patients with a…
