TL;DR
This study evaluates hand hygiene practices and healthcare-associated infection rates in Brazilian hospitals to identify areas for improvement.
Contribution
A large-scale assessment of hand hygiene and HAI burden in Brazilian ICUs using a self-assessment and perception survey.
Findings
Significant negative correlations were found between hand hygiene scores and CLABSI and CAUTI incidence densities.
Most participating institutions showed room for improvement in hand hygiene practices.
Healthcare workers' perceptions varied across different institutional levels.
Abstract
Hand hygiene (HH) is essential for infection prevention. In Brazil, the "Saúde em Nossas Mãos," a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in intensive care units (ICUs), emphasizes the importance of adhering to the WHO's multimodal strategy to enhance patient safety. We aimed to assess the baseline status of HH in the participating ICUs.Table 1Summary of the self-assessment on hand hygiene: scores and HAI incidence density baseline.Table 2The main features of health workers who responded to the Hand hygiene-HAI perception questionnaire Summary of the self-assessment on hand hygiene: scores and HAI incidence density baseline.
