TL;DR
This study examines ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by gram-negative bacteria in a Colombian hospital, identifying risk factors like age and antibiotic resistance that contribute to higher mortality.
Contribution
The study provides a six-year retrospective analysis of VAP in a Colombian hospital, identifying specific risk factors and microbial patterns unique to the region.
Findings
Klebsiella and Pseudomonas were the most common pathogens causing VAP.
Carbapenemase-producing organisms were detected in 31.75% of cases, mainly in Pseudomonas.
Advanced age, high SOFA score, and vasopressor requirements were associated with increased mortality.
Abstract
Advances in intensive care have led to reduced mortality in many critical illnesses; however, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains a serious complication. This study analyzes the clinical characteristics, microbiological findings, and factors associated with mortality in patients with VAP in a Colombian hospital between 2018 and 2024.Table 1.Patients general characteristics of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by gram negative microorganismsImage 1.Microbiological isolates and carbapenemase expression Patients general characteristics of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by gram negative microorganisms Microbiological isolates and carbapenemase expression A retrospective cohort study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Bucaramanga, Colombia, which has 50 intensive care beds. The study included 189 patients aged over 18 years diagnosed with VAP…
