TL;DR
This paper describes a successful outpatient IV antibiotic program that improved patient outcomes and saved healthcare costs through multidisciplinary care.
Contribution
A community hospital's OPAT program with low adverse events and high treatment success is presented and analyzed.
Findings
88% of patients completed OPAT treatment with 87% infection resolution.
Treatment failure and adverse drug reaction rates were 2% and 2.2%, below national averages.
The program saved an estimated $10.7M–$16.1M through outpatient care.
Abstract
Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) facilitates IV antibiotic administration in the outpatient setting, enhancing patient satisfaction and reducing healthcare costs. Continuous monitoring and comparison to national benchmarks support safe, effective care and drive quality improvement. Memorial Physician Group–Infectious Disease (MPG-ID) and Memorial Home Infusion (MHI) launched a formal OPAT service at Memorial Healthcare System (MHS) in February 2022, which has since expanded to meet growing demand. Objective: To describe the demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of patients referred for OPAT at a community hospital. This single-site retrospective chart review included MHS patients referred for OPAT at the MPG-ID clinic between Aug 1, 2024, and Jan 31, 2025. Patients were evaluated by the MPG-ID team and followed until OPAT completion or discontinuation.…
