TL;DR
This paper explores how Medicare Part D data can be used to track antibiotic use and support public health efforts at national and local levels.
Contribution
The paper introduces the use of CMS Part D Public Use Files for antibiotic use surveillance and stewardship in public health.
Findings
CMS PUFs have been used to track antibiotic prescribing by provider type, antibiotic, and geography.
Data from PUFs were used to identify high-prescribing counties and evaluate prescribing predictors.
Limitations include lack of prescription indication and misclassification of practice location.
Abstract
Public health antibiotic stewardship programs utilize different data sources to support antibiotic use (AU) surveillance and inform stewardship priorities. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare Part D Prescribers Public Use Files (PUFs) contain annual summaries of prescription drug claims by state and provider for all drugs, antibiotics, opioids, and antipsychotics. In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated a community of practice on using PUFs for AU surveillance. We describe national and local use cases of PUFs to assess and inform public health stewardship activities.Figure 1:Summary of Tracking and Reporting Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Part D Public Use Files National and Local Public Health Antibiotic Stewardship Use CasesFigure 2:Data Source and Population Related Limitations of Centers for Medicare and…
