TL;DR
This study compares the clinical features and outcomes of endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus and Enterococcus, finding differences in patient age, symptom duration, and valve involvement.
Contribution
The study provides a detailed comparison of clinical characteristics and outcomes between Staphylococcal and Enterococcal endocarditis.
Findings
EIE patients were older and had higher comorbidity scores compared to SIE patients.
EIE was associated with higher rates of vegetation detection and valve perforation.
Native aortic valve involvement was more common in EIE cases.
Abstract
Infective endocarditis (IE) was once considered a relatively uncommon, yet life-threatening illness resulting from the invasion of cardiac tissue by circulating microorganisms. However, according to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, the global incidence of IE has increased by 40% over the past decade. Many IE cases could be attributable to recent advances in cardiac interventions, such as minimally invasive transcatheter valve replacements. Staphylococcus and Enterococcus species are the two most common pathogens responsible for most IE cases. This study aims to compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of IE caused by these pathogens.Table 1:Demographics and Baseline Characteristics of SIE vs. EIETable 2Complications and Clinical Outcomes of SIE vs EIE Demographics and Baseline Characteristics of SIE vs. EIE Complications and Clinical Outcomes of SIE vs EIE A…
