TL;DR
A positive reinforcement program with non-monetary rewards improved hand hygiene compliance in a VA hospital.
Contribution
A novel non-monetary incentive program using code words and rewards to boost hand hygiene compliance in healthcare.
Findings
Hand hygiene compliance increased from 83% to 89% on medical/surgical floors after the intervention.
The 'take 5' code word was used an average of 208 times per month to remind colleagues about hygiene.
Premium parking spots were the most chosen reward among staff winners.
