TL;DR
This study found that the updated Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine reduced hospitalizations and medical visits for COVID-19 in adults during the 2024-2025 season.
Contribution
The study provides new evidence on the real-world effectiveness of the mRNA-1273 KP.2 vaccine against recent COVID-19 outcomes.
Findings
The vaccine was 52.8% effective in preventing hospitalization due to COVID-19.
It was 39.4% effective in preventing medically attended cases of COVID-19.
Effectiveness was observed in a high-risk population over a median follow-up of 57 days.
Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of Moderna’s updated mRNA-1273 vaccine targeting the KP.2 variant, compared to people who did not receive any 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, in preventing COVID-19-associated hospitalizations and medically attended COVID-19 among adults aged ≥18 years in the United States during the 2024-2025 season. Data were extracted from linked administrative healthcare claims and electronic health records (EHR) for vaccinations from 23 August 2024 through 24 December 2024 and followed through 31 December 2024. We conducted a retrospective matched cohort study with propensity score weighting to adjust for differences between groups to assess vaccine effectiveness (VE) against COVID-19 outcomes. VE was calculated as 1 minus the hazard ratio (HR) from Cox proportional hazards models. Overall, 465,073 mRNA-1273 KP.2 vaccine recipients were matched 1:1 to unexposed…
